James Kibby first significant musical venture after becoming a full-time musician was to join Basil ‘Manenberg’ Coetzee’s new group Sabenza in 1985 and start touring, recording (3 albums in all), and performing with them all over SA (Kippies, Jamesons, Rainbow Jazz Club, Grahamstown Festival to name a few) and internationally (London and all over England and Scotland, Amsterdam, Rome, and Geneva)
With Basil’s untimely passing in 1998, he concentrated more on teaching both privately and at the Jazz Workshop School of Music in Cape Town as well as playing in much smaller jazz and blues outfits, subsequently forming Acid Blues with drummer Richard Pickett and bassist Maurice Paliaga, as well as an original music trio with drummer Carlo Fabe and bassist Peter Ndlala.
He has released albums with Acid Blues (Live at Carnival Court) and a solo album (Nowhere2hide – The James Kibby Project) as well as played guitar on numerous sessions for other artists. His most recent recorded output (March 2018) is with his new 6-piece blues band High-End Blues (Live at Milestone).
He also continues to teach via Zoom and Skype, as well as presenting a radio show (The Kibby Factor) every Monday evening on All Jazz Radio.
Currently, his performances include a solo acoustic set using a loop station (recently seen at the Blue Room, Walala Wasala, and Afrikaburn). He also does an electronic music set (mostly techno) using a combination of guitar, voice, percussion, and midi controllers as well as a DJ set. Samples of all of these can be found on his YouTube and Mixcloud channels
