Accomplished Singer/ Songwriter and guitarist Nick Turner was the founding member of Sons of Trout in the late 90s, and later, one half of Mikanic, with fellow Trout Mike Rennie.

Nick’s music effortlessly spans genres with influences ranging from Rock, Reggae, and afro-pop to ghoema, hip-hop, and jazz. He writes in both English and Afrikaans, with songs that are lyrically powerful, relevant, humorous, and energetic. His music has a wide appeal, with performances that feature virtuosic musicianship.

In 2004 Nick moved to New York City with his band Mikanic. During his stay in the Big Apple he collaborated with some of the best in the business, most notably Bakhiti Kumalo and Tony Cedras (from Paul Simon fame), Zolani Mahola (Freshly Ground), and Nathi Gcabashe (Hugh Masakhela Band). The band played and sold out many of New York City’s legendary venues including Lincoln Centre,  CBGB’s, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory, and Symphony Space.

In 2009 Nick returned to Cape Town to embark on a solo career. Since his return, he has graced the stages of many of South Africa’s most prestigious festivals, most notably The Cape Town International Jazz Festival , Rocking the Daisies, and KKnK (Klein Karoo kunstefees) to name a few. At KKnK he has been involved in a number of award-winning shows. In 2010 he won the award for “Best debut production” alongside Karen Zoid and Louis Mhlanga. In 2015 he was part of the show “Al le die Berge Nog so Blou” which clinched the award for “Best music production” at the festival. The show also won the prestigious Fiesta award for “Best music production” in the same year. In 2018, his Afrikaans project, “Korreltie Kantel”, was nominated for Best Adult Contemporary Afrikaans album at the South African Music Awards. In 2019, Nick was part of the cast in David Kramer’s production “Platteland”. The show also received the Fiesta award for “Best Music Production” in 2019. Nick has had the good fortune of working with a swathe of acclaimed South African artists, apart from the above-mentioned artists, the list includes, Buddy Wells, Ramon Alexander, Jannie van Tonder, Kevin Gibson, Ronan Skillen, and Schalk Joubert et al.

Nick is also involved in a number of exciting new projects. In 2018 he joined the “Hanepoot Brass Band” The group plays indigenous South African tunes, covering a wide range of local jazz composers. During lockdown, with no gigs in the foreseeable future, Nick has been collaborating and composing material for his 3 new projects namely “The Misty Cliffs”, “TDK90” and “Odd Times” (w/ percussionist Ronan Skillen)
